With serious work left to do in Congress, Guinta didn’t roll up his sleeves and get to work helping grow New Hampshire’s economy for the middle class, he voted to start his taxpayer-funded vacation early.
Before he left, though, he wrote an op-ed telling his constituents how critical it was to stay in Washington, the better to mislead them.
Guinta voted against a bipartisan re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and supported a watered-down version that put women at risk in New Hampshire.
The House version supported by Guinta eroded provisions for immigrant victims’ safety and could actually give abusers more tools with which to harm victims. It also stripped key protections to Native American and LGBT victims of abuse.
Guinta’s bill lowered reporting standards for violence and stalking on college campuses, elimination of critical victim advocate programs, omitting or altogether stripping protections for some women.
Guinta spent more taxpayer dollars on “franked” mailings, many of which are highly produced, campaign-style literature, than any other member of Congress in 2011. His hypocrisy is glaring, as he once railed against this practice, calling it “propaganda.” The Union Leader called “offensive.”
It was less than two years ago that Guinta was attacking other members of Congress for producing similar mailings. In February 2008, the Union Leader declared the practice “offensive” and called on the members to apologize.
In a June 9, 2010 statement, candidate Guinta promised to enact a reform of the franking system, calling the practice “electioneering.” In 2008, then-GOP Party Chair Fergus Cullen also called out members of Congress for sending “politically-driven mail from their Federal congressional offices at taxpayer expense” not unlike what is currently arriving in 1st District mailboxes from Congressman Guinta.
Guinta and Congressional Republicans have voted more than 30 times to let insurance companies deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions; to take away the ability of parents to keep their children on their health insurance; and to increase prescription drug costs for seniors on Medicare.
But Guinta has not voted once for a single jobs bill, prefering playing politics instead of working to improve the lives of middle-class New Hampshire families.”
Guinta proudly stood with Rep. Darrel Issa in New Hampshire this June.
Issa, the head ethics investigator in Congress, has been accused of using his powerful position to benefit himself and his business holdings. As the New York Times reported ”Congressman Darrell Issa “has secured millions of dollars in Congressional earmarks for road work and public works projects that promise improved traffic and other benefits to the many commercial properties he owns here north of San Diego.”
Guinta has been named one of the most corrupt members of Congress by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, for failing to come clean about a previously undisclosed $355,000 bank account. Guinta has yet to answer questions about where he acquired the mysterious bank account. When Guinta was serving as mayor of Manchester, the city of Manchester had to put a lien on one of his properties for failure to pay city taxes and wastewater bills.
